The first thing that caught me about this app was it’s name. Now for those who don’t know I’m from Trinidad and Tobago and if you’re familiar with my people you would know that we have our own dialect and one phrase used daily from this dialect is, “yuh done” or “u done” So it makes sense now right? Honestly I heard about this app and I wasn’t excited, I thought to myself, “damn another boring task manager” and when I opened it, I was greeted by nothing exciting, however when I dug further I realised it was packed with various goodies, like a voice recorder, sketch app, etc.

This makes recording tasks very simple. You can draw, record, take a picture or type out text to attach to your “task” to make it easier to remember. The lite version is what I used to write this review and it loads reasonably fast although my devices is overclocked to 1.2Ghz. It comes packed with themes so the programme can match your current theme as best as possible however in the future, I would like to see an integration with my social networks so that important events can be broadcasted into the app and then you can be alerted via a tone and get to see what tasks you have available. Maybe also task sharing where, your boss or friend can write out a task and send it to you over Wifi in the work place,for now you’re just alerted of your tasks when you set the alarm for it.

It comes also with a neat calender and the *Help button actually is animated so no need to read a list of boring help notes. But honestly I’m not a task manager person, and even though it comes with so many nice things to make jotting down tasks simple fast, I rather just take a mental note, but it is a great looking app though and very useful for those with a busy schedule.

The Nokia N8 is a great phone to have around. I use it a lot at the Hospital where I work mostly to take pictures of rare clinical cases, but I want to see more out of it. Recently I have been looking for medical apps around the Ovi Store and did some interesing findings. Talking about med apps there should be noted that there are two kind of apps: those that are directed to patients or non professional and those which are for the health professionals, such as nurses, medics (like myself ) and so on. While there is a lack of the later, there are some good apps for patients interested on keeping up with their health. This medic roamed the OVI Store with a Nokia N8 and these are my findings:

1. Heart Rate Monitor by Pico Brothers

One of the most simple and yet elegant heart rate monitors on the ovi store. Upon launching the app you are immediately asked if the app can connect to the internet for ads. I know, ads! But this makes the app free for all of us and stimulates developers to keep creating great apps. So on with the app. This app is meant to measure the heart rate and can be used both by patients and health workers, you just have to find your pulse or on your neck. and then tap the screen for every beat you feel. After a few beats you will get a fair measure of your heart beat. Simple and very helpful. Myself have used it to check my patient’s heart rate accurately. Great user interface too!

2. Health n Family by xcube

This app works like a medical file for family members. You can add each family member to the list and add important medic details such as blood type, alergies, medical history like previous surgerys and emergency contact numbers just in case. While it is very helpful to have that info at hand, it is kind of difficult to use it as a reference. There is no way to export the info to a computer file or to print it, so it is very  unlikely that a medic will have the guts to access your deeper phone apps in an emergency case.  On the other hand, this could be used to create a patient file for those that visit the medic office, but again, there is no  way to export / import the info, so it’s unlikely that I would use it in a practical way. Anyways, great way to keep some info at hand.

3. First Aid by Divum

This app is a great one I must say. Is a quite simple first aid reference. The core function is the Act Now option which is a list of emergency cases of all types. In example, what to do in Allergy? Well you can search the word Allergy in the large list and will display the symptoms and definition, this will teach normal people about how to recognize it and what to do in such cases. Excellent for non health profesionals! There is also a list of first aid and medical kit that will let you know what should be a must have in your house.  Another option is the life saving emergency techniques which include CPR, Choking, and dressing, great for non profesional with lots of picture and easy instructions. And lastly you can make a medical profile, just in case like in the Health n Family app, but again, I dont think is very practical. Anyways, great educational app for the non profesional. You should all check it out.

4. Blood Pressure Tracker by Migital Technovations

Another tracker for Blood pressure. This will do great for patients who suffer from hypertension. While the user interface isn’t very bright, this app works as it should. After checking the blood pressure, the user should use the Log Entry option and add in the results of the check both systolic and diastolic along with the pulse rate and a note if needed. Then you can see the results in a graph making obvious if your pressure is going down or up or if the current treatment is working. Simple, but nice. As a plus the app also has some useful tips and symptom list of high blood pressure. A way to export graphs and logs would have been nice, but still seems practical to have it on your phone.

5. Bacterium by OffScreen

Found this game while checking medical apps at the OVI Store. While not an app it is a great game that any health professional will find nice. We all like having fun . The gameplay is simple, there is a bacteria growing in a petri dish, they are  replicating all the time and after some time these bacteria blobs will produce a critter, this one will crawl out of the dish and make you lose health, until you lose all your life points. The user must use the gun around the petri dish and  try to control the bacteria population. This game runs until the user loses all the health, it gets harder all the time but you can go on forever and I can tell you, it’s very addictive. There are power ups dropped by the bacteria blobs such as faster guns, faster bullets, double gun, and super bomb great for when critters are too much to exterminate with the gun. The graphics are awesome and better yet, it is free at the ovi store.

After this short review of the best apps on the store what else do we need? I think there is a lack of apps for the health professionals. There is no drug dictionary, found just one medical calculator at the whole store, it just had 25 calcs and wasnt free. We all need more apps for doctors and nurses, apps what will serve as tools for our work. There is a great market oportunity there and  many developers are ignoring it. I will keep an eye there and bring any finding that I consider important. Meanwhile keep healthy .

I was browsing the other day through the Ovi Store and found an unusual app called Carpe Diem Daily, so I downloaded and tried it. The basic idea is having an app that can make your daily day a more interesting experience. Every day there is a new task such as “take a picture of yourself with your pet”, then after you have completed the task you can show other users your results, share via twitter and then you can also see what other usershave done. Just access their website www.carpediemdaily.com to see other users tasks. Simple, yet interesting.

So today May 8th 2010, I started my Carpe Diem Daily and found today’s task which is “Record a small status video” and a small button saying ‘record’. I found nice to have camera integration, so I could record simple and easy. After recording a small 15 secs video, you are prompted to add a small note and then publish. Then you can share it via twitter.

Suggestions for the developers? Well they could add a small homescreen widget to see the new tasks every day. Just today I received an invitation from our finnish friends at Nokia, it seems that they are going to announce something big on tomorrow. This is the invitation.

We have been reading lately that Nokia was going to revamp the whole Ovi Store to fix some issues that they have been having since their launch on May 2009, so I guess that is all about, but who knows? Might be something else, and that is just exciting!

Our guesses

1. Revamp of Ovi Store

2. Revamp of whole Ovi Services (files, share, email, etc)

3. New device with Maemo

4. First Nokia’s Symbian Foundation powered device

5. Your guess???

There is a big counter, and the guest list with lots of familiar names (guess who is on it as dcastrog? It has been a time since the launch of the Ovi store and lots of apps have been released for the joy of the Nokia users. Just recently the daily app blog organized an app award, the best of the best apps would receive the honor to be called a must have, a title that every app wishes to be granted with.

They put the nominees in 8 different categories: Music, Social Networking, Twitter (so important these days that it needs it own category), City Guides and Mapping, Entertainment, News and Info, Games, and finally, Utilities. And let the users vote for their favorite app, at the end they would count the votes and choose the winners. I should tell you who won.

In the Music Category, the winner of the Must Have App is:  Shazam! I really like this app, so useful for those moments when you hear a song but you cant know the song and the singer/band, and asking a friend later won’t help much. A few minutes ago I just heard a song in a tv commercial and wondering “nice song, I like it, I would like to know the name to buy it on the Music Store later”, but no, I dont have Shazam on my phone, YET!

In the Social Networking the only winner is: Nimbuzz! Today the social networks are a very important part of our daily life, so much that we usually use more than one, and that is when Nimbuzz comes along to help. With a large list of supported social networks and instant messengers, Nimbuzz connects you with the people you care, all in one place. No need to have mutiple clients on your phone, just one: Nimbuzz

The winner of the Twitter category is no surprise: Gravity, with universal acclaim it has been named THE twitter app for your phone. With neat and practical interface it makes easier than ever to tweet on the go. There is a 10 day trial on the Ovi Store, so check it out. I really liked it even when I am not a big tweeter fan.

The winner of the City Guides and Mapping is: World Mate 2009. If you are always traveling around then this is for you. It has free content wich includes, world clock, currency converter, weather forecast and so on. But the real value of this app is the paid upgrade which include realtime flight alerts for 350 airlines. You can not miss a flight with this, unless you really want to.

On the Entertainment Category the winner is: SPB TV. Well I have to admit that I have never tested this app, I just tried downloading it from the Ovi Store but looks like it is not working. Bad luck I guess. Anyways, I saw the demo on the developer site and I think it worths it. You get television off the internet, not sure which channels you can get but I bet that they should entertain you. Also it’s suscription free, you just buy the app and you’re done.

In the News and Info category the winner is Accuweather.com. I’m not really sure on this, I have tested this app since the first day I own my N97. Everything works fine, I like the UI, and the widget works perfectly. The only downside of this is that it is not that accurate. I have seen the app tell me that my city is at 30°C and then I see my local weather forecast tell me we are on 20°C. So maybe they should get the info right and I maybe will put it in my homescreen.

In the Game Category the winner is MicroPool s60. I have to say that I’m not a big player of my phone, I prefer a giant tv with killer sound and real graphics. Also I prefer to save my battery for the whole day. But when I’m bored or waiting in a room or something I usually pull my phone to play some games that keep me distracted. One of the games I really like is pool. And Micro Pool is one of he best games I have ever played on a cellphone, they even call it a ‘simulator’ and that means that you get real physics, real sounds and the best graphics you can get.

Finally the winner of the Utilities category we have: Vlingo. The idea behind this app is really good, you talk to your phone and it will do what you want. You can send messages or make notes among other things. And the best thing is that it rarely mishears your words. You talk to it and it will send your voice over internet and then execute your commands. But, sadly, even when you can choose the spanish language, the Vlingo app struggles to understand me when I talk in my native tongue.

Today Im going to show you how to get a date with a little help from our best friend, the Ovi Store. Probably you have noticed that spending the whole day playing around with your phone isnt getting you any dates, no? Well I tell you, women are usually seeking more attention from you. So let’s kick the geek out for some time and bring out the stud we all have really deep inside.

So let’s start. First, take a look at the mirror and see what can be improved. Most of girls like a clean face, so that’s a start. You may turn on the front facing camera on your nokia and see how you are looking. Do your hair, brush your teeth, dress properly and you are done.

Then its time to get the date. Pop out the Facebook app and  check women that you would like to invite for dinner. It might be hard to only choose one, who should it be? Sofia, Ramona, Jessica, or Alejandra? Let your gadget choose for you, take out your phone and ask the Magic 8 ball who should you ask out. Remember, the  ball is the law, if it says no it’s no, and when it say yes do not doubt it!

Now, Alejandra has accepted the date and you are setting up the environment, you should set the mood with some music and why not let the phone make you a setlist with the most cheesy and romantic music you have on it. Start your Playlist Dj and pull the romantic bar all the way up and all the other bars their way down. This way you will make sure you will only get extra slow romantic music from your collection. Alejandra will love it.

Never understimate the power of the lights, a good lighting will make wonders for your date and Alejandra will feel more confortable at a dinner under the light of the candles. But do not mistake my friend, we do not use the prehistoric wax made candles anymore. The trend is to use your phone do as everything and this includes (but not limited to) a candle. Install the candle touch app and you are ready to go. The environment is set and your girl is taking a romantic dinner that will surely never forget.

Conversation will flow easily with all these tips, just remember that most girls do not enjoy talking about symbian multitasking and the wonder that the N900 will be when you buy it the next week.

so you’re walking down the street and you hear a song playing, and you want to know the name of the song, what do you do? you could go and ask the person who is playing the music the name of the song or you could just take out your phone and start up Shazam, Shazam is identify any tune and tells you the name of the song,the artists and album as well as the options to buy the track right then and there

#3- Nimbuzz

if you’re on Google talk,Windows live,Yahoo,AIM,My space,ICQ,Skype,Facebook,Jabber,Giovani or Gadu-Gadu then you need to get Nimbuzz! from online chat and instant messages to international calls and file sending this app does it all, it pulls all your contacts together in one place, so you can exchange messages with all your friends on all networks

so you’re on the road and on the go and there is a dog dancing on the sidewalk, what do you do? (a) – run away (b) – kill it or (c) – recode it! i’m going to go with (c) and if you going to recode it, you might as well share it online right? With Qik this is easy and simple (the recode and share online part, not the killing and running away part) just start it up and and hit recode, you video is then instantly live on the internet where the world can see it!

if you’re on twitter and you have a mobile phone then you need garvity? not gravity as in gravity it self but gravity as in the s60 twitter client It, Gravity is a fully-featured twitter client that supports multiple accounts, Twitter Search, Laconica, Ping.fm, posting of pictures via MobyPicture & TwitPic and it wraps everything into a gorgeous looking interface
