If you haven’t seen Nokia’s lastest competition, then you should check it out! It’s called N8 Make my App. you just need to give the idea, users will vote and every week 10 apps will be shortlisted, then Nokia judges will select the 12 best apps and then the chosen ideas will be developed for real apps at Nokia World in London 2010 this september.

The prizes? Well, besides the all-paid trip to London, the 12 winners will get the new Nokia N8 when it’s released. Go ahead, don’t be shy and let the world know your ideas. There are 4 different categories for you to try, so get brain running!

By the way, I submitted an idea a few weeks ago, and if you like it, you should vote it! Its called Extreme Pinball, and its basically a pinball version for your Nokia handset. So far I got 443 votes, check it out! Click on the image to follow.

happy voting!

In the final part of our series (check out Products and Services) of year end polls, we take a look at applications. The range and variety of apps available for Nokia devices is as broad as it is deep, so narrowing the list down to 10 for you to vote for was tricky in itself. Not as tricky as it was for you to vote, it would seem as not much separated the top three. Still, we have a winner, unlike in Services, so read on to find out the favourites from 2009.

The winner: Gravity (27%)

This isn’t the first poll Gravity has won this year. Back in May we asked you to vote for your favourite S60 Twitter app, and this one took a healthy 43 per cent of the vote. A great interface, addictive usability and some genuinely useful features add up to a winning recipe.

We said: “It’s interface is extremely clear, and it’s tough not to get suckered in by its velvet-smooth transitions and ease of use”

You said: “It was a solid Twitter app to start off with but the Google Reader support, even at this alpha stage, makes it absolutely indispensable” – commented Alex Whiteside

Nokia Photo Browser (21%)

Striking a good balance between fun, useful features and uncomplicated ease of use, Nokia Photo Browser has proved a popular addition to the Symbian arsenal. On touchscreen Nokias in particular, its intuitive simplicity makes browsing through your pics a joy.

We said: “If this is the standard of app now coming out of BetaLabs then we’re in for a real treat this year and beyond”

You said: “I like it a lot, hopefully Nokia will develop this software further and make it your official photo browser” – commented Gregg003

Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 (15%)

One of those apps that’s as much about tomorrow as it is about today, Ovi Suite sweeps all previous Nokia software aside and delivers a single PC interface that’s streamlined, user-friendly and perfectly in sync with your device.

We said: “Eventually Ovi Suite will replace all your Nokia software with one simple, elegent yet powerful piece of software that’ll handle all the tasks you’d expect it to for your device”

You said: “Let’s hope that also a linux version is in the pipeline” – commented Pier

So that’s it. 2009 in a number of little nutshells. Hope you enjoyed this trip down memory lane as much as we did. Here’s looking forward to a cracking year in 2010. Wishing you a happy new year, we will see you on the other side.

Today I received an envelope directly from womworld Nokia. I’m now wondering what can be inside? It’s pretty light and small, so surely it is not a new device, a shame I know, but let’s open it

So inside there is an invitation card and says:

Dear David,

You are cordially invited to the Ovi Daily App “Must Have App of the Year” virtual awards 2009. The announcement will be made at blog.ovi.com/dailyapp in january 2010

Please find enclosed some sample applications for your consideration. The ballots open on december 14th 2009 and you will have just seven days to cast your votes in the corresponding categories.

Please watch the video embedded here for further information: blogs.nokia.com/dailyapp/appawards

May the best app win!

(QR code include)

Also, included inside the envelope there is this ultra cool USB stick which includes 6 apps that I will check out very soon. The apps are the following:

1. Fring

2. Nimbuzz

3. Nokia Barcode Reader

4. Touch Note

5. Tweets

6. World Mate

So now, in the following week I’m going to check these apps and then I will cast my vote. Exciting, I know. Keep an eye for more details on the next days! Meanwhile you may check some apps at the Ovi store and visit the Daily App Awards site to cast your own vote!

David CAstro

ps. wondering what does the QR code says?

“Why are you messing around with QR codes?

This time Im reviewing a great piece of software, its Remind Me V3.53 by MobiFun Soft. Im using a N97 for testing so its working for S60 5th edition, but it shall work on 3rd edition also. Something that I find funny is that I was just thinking about an app that would do what this one does just days before I knew this one existed. Cool!

So what is the premise for this software? As it name says so, Remind Me is going to remind you whether you have a new missed call, a SMS or email. You may say: But why would I need something like this if my phone already has homescreen popups, vibrations, breathing lights and tones?

can you see my breathing light?

Well, first of all, if you own a N97 you may have noted that the vibration alert is rather weak and the breathing light is too dim to be seen easily. So here is where Remind Me comes in. You can set up this app to make it in a way that, when receiving an SMS (ie) your custom tone and alert will play as usua l, but then Remind Me will vibrate every 2minutes until you check the new message. Also it can play a short beep, and the red and green button will blink until you have read the new items.

Everything can be edited, the time for beeping, the tone of the beep, time of vibration, everything! The interface is simple, after starting the application you will find a list; missed calls, sms, and email. These items can be edited in the following way

The alarm option is the master setting for the Remind Me, if you disable it, the app wont work in that section (ie SMS, or email) the period is the time in between every alarm. You can repeat this alarm in a preset time or indefinitely. Then you may choose what volume and what tone to play in every alarm and what profiles should it be played in. The vibration in every alarm may be edited, by profile and by times. The light alert is my favorite, you can choose in what profiles it should be used and what type of alert. You may choose the front keys for a more discrete alarm, or screen that will blink up if you have a new message.

On the setting tab you may choose to enable Remind Me completely. Then in what time it should be working, like say you don’t want it to be working at bedtimes and make it work while you at the office. Then you may choose what days should it be working, may it be weekend, always, etc. And then there is the option to stop alerts with a keypress or while reading the new message (or email or call).

So why is it usefull? Because imagine you are going to the bathroom and you receive a SMS, when you are back the first thing you are going to see is that green and red keys blinking, if you werent using the app you would only see the dimly breathing light trying to alert you. Another case when you have your phone in your pocket and you receive another messager and you fail to feel the vibration or hear the tone, then the Remind Me app will remind you in 2 minutes (or any time you choose) that you have a new alert.

There are a few bugs but I’m thinking that it might be an issue with the phone firmware, rather than the software. When having an alert and unlocking the phone, the green and red keys will turn off and wont light up again until you lock/unlock again. The N97 has been having bugs with the lock/unlock key, so I wouldnt be surprised if it was a firmware issue.

Actually I have to confess that, before testing, I wasnt very convinced of the idea of this app because I thought it was redundant to have a 3rd party app to alert me when I have a new message. But I admit that I was wrong, this app has proven very usefull! I can go far to say that this app is a MUST HAVE.

If you want to test this great piece of software you may go to http://www.mobifunsoft.com/ and get a free trial, then you will know what I’m talking about

As most of you who follow me on twitter know, i have been testing emoze for the last few weeks, and now after weeks of testing, here is my review of emoze.

What is it*

Emoze is an email client but it’s not just a email client, it’s the ultimate push email client, emoze allows you to get email from several types of email accounts which includes gmail, yahoo, outlook & hotmail just to name a few, you can also get social network massages from facebook.

One of the things i like most about emoze is that it works with wi-fi, yes! so if you’re like me and you don’t have a data plan, emoze will still work

Setting up emoze took longer then i expected, that being said it was also a lot easy-er then i expected, thing i liked most about emoze were the customization options, this is by far the most customizable software that i have ever reviewed.

there is nothing easy er then using emoze, i tried using nokia’s mail for exchange and i got it up and running but the time i spent on it, lets just say i could have installed and setup emoze 12 times. “yes! it took that long”

What i liked*

power saving mode

Power saving mode is one of the best things in this app, it allows you to pick how offing emoze will check for a new email, i found this very useful when using wi-fi, this lets you get your mail with out killing your battery.

Customization options

From picking the folders at the mail comes from, to picking a notification tone, emoze is yours to control.

I would’t list out everthing i liked because…. ”lets just say i liked everthing”

What i didn’t like*

I llike ever thing about this software and this one thing that i didn’t like is a not a big deal but i still have to tell you what it is, as i said before you get email from “gmail, yahoo, outlook & hotmail” that is ture but to get email from more then one of your accounts, you will have to upgarde to Pro,

The bottom line and Score*

all and all emoze is a great app with a world of customization options. it’s by far one of the best push email client out there. and i think that you should give it a try.

Two weeks ago I had the great oportunity to travel up to Montecarlo to the Nokia Developer Summit 2009. I was competing in the Nokia N97 Widget Competition, and along with Plusmo and Yalla-Ya I worked in the Hackathon to deliver the best widget-application for the Nokia users. The result was Rocket, a Social Location App that you will see very soon!

But apart from that, I took my time to test the new Nseries, the Nokia N97. As you may know this is the most expected phone of the year. It was announced on december of 2008, and will be released next month, causing great hype amongst the mobile users. The expectations are hight, this phone is thought to change the way we use the internet.

Equipped with a 3.5 in resistive touchscreen and a full qwerty keyboard, the N97 separes itself from the rest of the Nseries. And if you are a Nseries fan, you may know that these are two characterisitics that we were waiting for so long ago. So let’s start!

What I liked*

The N97 is solid. The screen flips out and tilts on a 40 degree angle to be easily visible for the user. I loved the mechanism. It doesnt creaks, and has zero play on the sliding mechanism. It is great! The resisitive screen is beatiful and big enougn. There are many concerns around the resistive screen. People saying that it is not responsive enough like the capacitive, but I tell you, this screen is perfectly responsive and it doesn’t lag or hangs. The OS is the fastest Ive ever seen in an Nseries. But I would reserve my final word until I have all my widgets and memory loaded on. There are two colors, white and black, the white color is awesome, I’m sure I will get the white one.

The qwerty keyboard is spaced enough and the keys are well distributed. I was typing long texts as soon as I had 10 seconds trying it. So it will do good even for people with big thumbs. The materials are plastic and with a silver strip on the screen border, it feels good and not cheap.

The camera is great, the people of Carl Zeiss had been working hard I guess. This cellphone takes the most beatifull pictures I have seen on an Nseries, after the N82. Overall, the phone feels right in the hand, a bit big, but nothing too big we have not seen before

What I did not like*

Well, I was getting used to the N85 which is the slimmest Nseries around, and using the N97 makes me feel like Im back with my N95 which is kind of big. It is also a bit heavy. It is on the very edge of the pocketability, Im very sure I will be carrying it with a case hanging on the rim of the jeans’ pocket or on my belt. But I have read that Nokia considers this a mobile computer insted of a phone, so I guess having a computer so small is now a benefit.

The white model has a light leak under the red and green button, I’m not sure if Nokia pretends to fix it before the mass release but if they don’t they will have upset consumers. I mean, such a expensive phone should at least try to be perfect at this kind of things. The black one has the fingerprint magnet syndrom, one of the reasons I chose white instead of black.

And finally, the hinge seems a kind of fragile, and if you watch it by the sides, you can see the screen ribbon. I hope it won’t be a problem. One of the things that may worry me is the dust from my pocket or from the environment gathering around the ribbon or inside the phone. So I hope the screen closes thight inside one’s pocket.

To round it up*
The N97 pretends to be the most selling cellphone of this year. Nokia has been hyping it up since the announcement, and they have done well. Im sure it will sell very well. Since I won the widget competition Nokia will send me a free N97 as soon as it is realeased on the american market, that will be likely in July, so expect a full review of it when I get it. So, what about you? What are your concerns? Your expectations, tell us in the comment section!! I WANT TO HEAR YOU!!
