Interesting news on this day! Today Nokia announced a new “strategic realationship” with Yahoo. If you have been around for some time, you should remember when Yahoo search was THE search engine, before google took its place in the searching business. Still, Yahoo remains as one of the most popular sites on the internet, and one of the most visited sites inside the US.
This partnership will give Yahoo the opportunity to use Nokia’s Ovi Maps service on their site. This means that Yahoo users will be able to enjoy the benefits, such as mapping and navigation on their already owned services. Everything correctly branded as powered by Ovi by Nokia. On the other side Nokia will benefit with lots of new US based users, giving a firm step in one of the territories that Nokia has not been able to hold on until now.

Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat will now be powered by Yahoo, which doesn’t mean that they will disappear, but that will now reach new targets, giving the opportunity to interconnect services, between Nokia’s and Yahoo’s and who knows? Maybe Yahoo will offer these services to their own users as a new option along the already existing Yahoomail.
I see the big opportunities here, Yahoo can offer their services (mail, flickr, yahoo answers) to worldwide Nokia users, while Nokia will now welcome new users from the US. A fair trade I must say.
